The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse currently functions as a popular tourism destination for the community of North Wildwood. It is operated and maintained by The City of North Wildwood’s Historical Commission with money generated by donations and various fundraising projects; however the light is maintained by the United States Coast Guard Office of Aids to Navigation. The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse functions as a museum of educational displays of antiques and lighthouse memorabilia that is open to the public.

The Hereford Lighthouse is listed on both the National and State Registers of Historic Places. It is also part of the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail. The grounds of the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse has been recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as a certified National Habitat, providing the four basic habitual elements needed for thriving wildlife: food, water, shelter, and safe place to raise their young. It has also received recognition from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and contributed to the City of North Wildwood’s awarded Bronze Sustainable Jersey Certification and Tree City USA recognition in 2017-18.

The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse features a Victorian Style Park and Hereford Gardens that hosts over 200 species of flowers and plants. It is connected to a path way that connects to North Wildwood’s Seawall, the AngleseaWalk, a coastal path for people to sit, run, walk their pets, and experience spectacular views of Hereford Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean. Accompanied by benches and a large gazebo, it provides a tranquil setting for fishing, meditation, tourism, photography and education.

With its close proximity to Central Avenue and the beach, the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse stands as a popular setting for weddings and fun summer events. It also serves as a great photographic location for family and even engagement portraits.

The City and its Historical Commission will preserve the lighthouse as the community landmark, and impress upon and educate the public of its important heritage. If visiting the City of North Wildwood, the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse is a great destination for family and friends.
